Crook County Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the report of a hay shed on fire at the corner of Barnes and Barnes Butte Road NE of Prineville on November 16th at 06:04 am. Crews arrived to find a hay shed with 600 ton of hay well involved in fire with a 2nd hay shed full of hay 60 feet away. Two engines, two water tenders and an ambulance responded to the scene with 12 firefighters. The first hay shed was a complete loss. Crews worked throughout the day to successfully protect the second hay shed. Because of the difficulty of completely extinguishing 600 ton of hay, much of the burning hay was moved a short distance away and allowed to burn. The flames and smoke from the burning hay will be visible for several days as it is allowed to burn down to a size that can be completely extinguished. The cause of the fire is likely spontaneous combustion. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
